Metal Braces Construction

Metal braces have more components than other types of braces. Parts include brackets, stainless steel bands, and wires. There are flexible archwires that go over the brackets and small elastic bands named ligatures. They keep the wire in place.
Some people use clear or tooth-coloured ligatures to make the look of braces less noticeable while others go with ligatures in bright colours to be more fun and distinctive.

How Metal Braces Work

Metal braces work as all braces and clear aligners. They gently shift teeth into their correct positions. This takes time. It can take anywhere from a year to three years but the average orthodontic treatment lasts around 18 months.
Most orthodontists agree the best age for getting braces is between 9 and 14. That is where bones are still developing so they are more flexible and that makes for easier treatment. Treatment takes longer for older teens and adults but can be just as effective.

What to Expect With Metal Braces

Metal braces will have some discomfort when you first get them and after each orthodontist visit where they tighten them to continue shifting your teeth into their places. A common complaint is tongue, cheek, or lip irritation from the wires. There could be some jaw pain and eating could be challenging after a tightening at the orthodontist’s office.
The benefits outweigh the challenges because straightening your teeth not only gets you a great smile but it makes your teeth easier to clean. That helps in oral care for the prevention of gum disease and cavities. It can also correct temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders and give better mouth functions like chewing.
