Fillings

Fillings Protect Teeth

Ninety-one percent of adults in the U.S. have at least one filling in their mouth, according to the CDC National Center for Health Statistics. Fillings are a routine procedure that can fill a cavity and prevent it from reoccurring.
Even though fillings have been around for a long time, the way they are made has changed.

Types of Fillings

Half a century ago, you could always tell those who had fillings because you could see the silver in their mouths. Those were silver amalgam fillings. They were cheap and effective, even though they had a little mercury in them.
Silver amalgam fillings still exist but now we have so many more attractive options that are more popular.
Ceramic fillings are made from porcelain and look like natural teeth. There are also glass ionomer fillings that also look natural, although not as durable as ceramic. Composite fillings, made from a resin and plastic substance, are both affordable and natural looking making them a highly popular option. Composites are considered the best choice by many dentists.
The long-lasting fillings are going to be the metal ones made from gold or another metal. They can last up to 20 years or more but the downsides are they are expensive and visible.

The Necessity of Fillings

Fillings are the final part of remedying a cavity. A dentist will clean out the cavity, which is a pit or hole made by bacteria destroying the tooth enamel. The hole must be filled so bacteria and debris don’t collect in it. A filling is the perfect solution.

Getting a Filling

Getting a filling is a routine practice that takes about an hour to complete. The dentist will use a topical anesthetic to numb the gum for the local shot of anesthetic. Then, they will drill the cavity to clean it out.
Finally, they will put in the filling and seal it. You won’t feel pain but will feel pressure on the tooth being worked on.
Failing to remedy a cavity will only amount to further tooth decay. That could lead to more serious procedures like a root canal or tooth extractions. Fillings can prevent all of that.
Afterward, you won’t even know they are there. Schedule an appointment if you think you may have a cavity that needs filling. We can do it comfortably and conveniently.
