The earliest symptom of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis is when your gums bleed when you brush or floss. This will eventually lead to periodontitis, which is a more severe form of gum disease.

Once periodontitis starts, the gums can start receding exposing the tooth root. You can also have abscesses that are signs of infections.

Your gums can separate from the teeth, allowing bacteria to grow in the pockets. This all leads to advanced tooth decay.

Simple Ways to Avoid Gum Disease

The best and easiest way to avoid gum disease is to see your dentist twice a year for an exam and cleaning. Those with ongoing plaque issues may need additional cleanings or deep teeth cleanings to control it. Brushing twice daily, flossing at least once a day, and using a good antibacterial mouth rinse also helps.
