Gum Disease Treatment In Cambridge, ON

Treating Gum Disease

Gum disease has become a problem even with all the modern health care and oral cleaning devices available today. Approximately half of adult Americans older than 29 years old have it in some form.
Many studies try to determine exactly what causes gum disease but it boils down to diet and oral hygiene. A combination of a heavy sugar diet and a lack of focus on properly brushing and flossing can result in gum disease. Another fact is that those who breathe through their mouths a lot have more problems with it. That’s because airflow creates dry mouth and that leads to more plaque.

Gum Disease Symptoms

The earliest symptom of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis is when your gums bleed when you brush or floss. This will eventually lead to periodontitis, which is a more severe form of gum disease.

Once periodontitis starts, the gums can start receding exposing the tooth root. You can also have abscesses that are signs of infections.

Your gums can separate from the teeth, allowing bacteria to grow in the pockets. This all leads to advanced tooth decay.

Seeing a Periodontist

General dentists can help with gum disease with exams and cleanings but a periodontist has advanced training in dealing with gum disease. They can do gum grafts, bone grafts, and extractions that could become part of treating the disease.

Simple Ways to Avoid Gum Disease

The best and easiest way to avoid gum disease is to see your dentist twice a year for an exam and cleaning. Those with ongoing plaque issues may need additional cleanings or deep teeth cleanings to control it. Brushing twice daily, flossing at least once a day, and using a good antibacterial mouth rinse also helps.
